Bitter Ambrosia is a blasphemous retelling of the Garden of Eden that subverts the traditional narrative into one of queer acceptance and trans joy. This musical rendition shows the origins of the Snake, a fallen angel who journeys through Hell to make revelations about sin, piety, and gender expression. Rather than vilifying the Snake for tempting Eve, Bitter Ambrosia commends him for trying to save her from an ill-fated life of devout heteronormativity. This original story celebrates different expressions of queerness and the trans experience through boylesque, aerial lyra (standing rig), circus hula hoops, and live singing.
Amidst the rise of anti-queer fearmongering and trans erasure, Bitter Ambrosia shares a positive message of trans life that focuses more on happiness and fulfillment. It is written, produced, and performed exclusively by trans people. This is the first time that the show has been adapted for a 16+ audience. This version was created to so that younger trans people could see trans voices put to stage unadulterated and authentically.
