Noa Fort's Plant People
A long time Ditmas Park resident, Fort is a vocalist, pianist, composer, improviser and music therapist, working in the Jazz and Creative music scene in New York and Internationally. She released critically acclaimed albums as a composer/bandleader, and is a regular collaborator with some of NY's greatest improvisers. Fort is also a licensed creative arts therapist and board certified music therapist. Plant People is her chamber-jazz quintet of stellar improvisers; together they treat her compositions as starting points to collective improvisations and vice versa.
Featuring: Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon), Mike McGinnis (bass clarinet), Anders Nilsson (guitar), Satoshi Takeihi (drums) and Fort on voice and compositions
Dan Loomis’s Songs for the Mother Tree
What can trees tell us about community, love, intelligence and resilience? The scientific community is undergoing an explosion of discoveries of the powerful connectedness, consciousness and aptitude among trees. Our arboreal neighbors are capable of so much more than we have imagined — and take action in ways completely unlike our own - and often difficult for us to perceive.
Just as trees communicate with each other in a different way……. maybe we should be talking about them in a different way. This project is an attempt to channel the recent human inspiration from trees into a sonic world - to speak through music and art rather than only through science.
Featuring: Jeff Miles (guitar), Elsa Nilsson (flutes), Mike McGinnis (clarients), Noa Fort (voice), Dam Loomis (bass and compositions)
Live Music: Elsa Nilsson ~ Ravi Coltrane ~ Kari Van Der Kloot Quintet
Canadian vocalist Kari van der Kloot presents an exciting new voice on the horizon. Living somewhere in the space between jazz and folk, Kari’s compositions fit seamlessly into a tradition of great Canadian singer-songwriters, such as Joni Mitchell, while still honoring her roots in jazz music. The current iteration of the Kari van der Kloot Quintet features Kari's ethereal vocals floating over an earthy foundation of flutes and deep rhythm section playing. The music keeps the listeners on their toes, from full-on intricately arranged ensemble playing, to four-part vocal harmonies and intimate dialogues between the voice and flute. Kari’s debut album “Seedling” was released in 2016, and her second album “The Architects” was released to great acclaim in 2020 on Outside In Music’s Next Level imprint. In 2024, Kari released a new album, “Window” on TPR Records.
Kari van der Kloot: voice
Elsa Nilsson: flutes
Jamie Reynolds: keys
Gary Wang: bass
Jay Sawyer: drums
For the past decade, flutist, composer and bandleader Elsa Nilsson has explored unlikely connections among tendencies of human nature, contradiction and pluralism and the natural world. A conceptualist from every angle, the Gothenburg native left Sweden for Seattle in 2005 before settling in Brooklyn in 2010. Her breadth of work engages urgency, high-level improvising and layered, cinematic orchestration; her artistry, an earnest and actionable desire to collaborate with multi-modal artists and the changing world around her. Elsa's releases as a leader include "Quila Quinta" (2024), "Pulses" (with Band of Pulses, 2023), "Atlas of Sound- Coast Redwoods" (2022), "Dark Is Light" (2021), "Hindsight" (2020), "After Us" (2018) and "Salt Wind" (2017).

🎉 Open Call 2026! 🎉
We’re putting the call out to folks interested in creating an event in our Backspace in 2026! We are (still, daily!) thrilled to have moved into this expanded storefront in December 2022, which functions as a multipurpose space—shop in the front, and all kinds of ✨happenings✨ in the back. In the past 3 years we’ve been hosting local artist markets, literary readings, weekly yoga classes, art & craft workshops, performances of all types, kids’ events, and so much more! The Backspace is best suited for intimate, community-centered gatherings, and we’re excited to see what new ideas can come to life here in the year ahead 🔮
And so, we’re inviting folks to submit ideas they’d like to bring to fruition at some point in 2026. This could include....
💡 Performance artists — dance, movement, theater, etc — interested in showcasing their work
💡 Independent filmmakers planning a screening
💡 Folks interested in leading workshops or classes for the community
💡 Artists & makers who’d like to participate in our pop-up markets (which can also be an entry point for possibly bringing work onto the shop shelves, though not guaranteed)
💡 And so much more!
We’re especially excited about proposals that are community-rooted, process-driven, experimental, and care-forward.
One note on live music:
If you’re interested in playing a show in our Backspace, please email us directly at info@brooklynartery.com at any time during the year. We’ll be in touch if we see a good fit for a show!
Key dates & details:
🔸 Submissions will be accepted from Feb 13th to 28th, 2026
🔸 The submission form is HERE… it will be open for responses starting on Feb 13th
🔸 All applicants will be notified by March 13, 2026 regarding whether their proposal is a good fit for our 2026 programming!
Please know that due to capacity and scheduling constraints, we may not be able to accept all submissions, but we are already full of excitement and gratitude for all of the ideas that will flow into this open call. We can’t wait to read them and bring as many as possible to life! ✨

Join us for a very special book release party celebrating many of the neighborhood’s very own photographers!
Ditmas Park: A Visual Anthology is the first photographic documentation of our neighborhood in the 21st century. It is a candid reflection of Ditmas Park's diversity, beauty, and uniqueness. In 2024 Ashton Gooding proposed an idea for a photography club. This club, named In Good Company, would meet once a month to discuss photography books, photographers, techniques, and ideas. Over a year later and it has blossomed into a thriving group of artists—new friends from vastly different parts of the world brought together by a love of photography and the geography we share. Ditmas Park.
This full color anthology (with a fabulous die-cut "window" cover) features the photographic work of many of its regular members as well as a few special guests with connections to Ditmas Park.
