Author Event with Taylor & Co
Travel back in time with us to visit Langston Hughes's Mexico & Cuba, LIVE at Brooklyn Artery! Did you know he was a prolific translator of Spanish? He famously translated Afro-Cuban poet Nicolas Guillen (in black vernacular) and Spaniard poet Federico Garcia Lorca's Gypsy Ballads. But did you know he also translated fiction from Mexico & Cuba? NO? Neither did we! Ricardo Wilson II collects these translations from Hughs in Troubled Lands.
Ricardo will be in conversation with the amazing @kylecarrerolopez whose forthcoming collection PARTY LINE (from @graywolfpress) is one of the most anticipated poetry collections in recent memory.
Ciara Warner will lead us in a channeled reading of Hughes before Ricardo discusses his process of curating and editing this collection.

Hands that Steal from ‘Other’ Mouths
A theatrical two-player satire about Western empire and extraction, brought to us by Temitope Olujobi. “Hands that Steal from ‘Other’ Mouths” combines live video game performance, electro-pop music and a teach-in on the unequal exchange between the global North and South. The project began as a game commission for Meow Wolf that personifies the exploitative relationship between an anthropomorphic mouth (global South) and hand (global North) in a thrilling match of hide and seek. Since its humble button mashing beginnings, the project transformed from an arcade game, into an explosive show and geopolitical history lesson that feels like a concert and class at the same time.
Admission is free, please RSVP HERE to let us know you’re coming. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
Rest & Reset: Community Ear Acupuncture for Calm
Join us for a cozy evening of relaxation, stress relief, and nervous system support. We’ll gather in a circle (seated in chairs) to receive ear acupuncture and create a communal field of rest.
We’ll begin with a brief introduction to ear acupuncture and the specific points we’ll be using, then I’ll place a few tiny, sterile needles in the ear to promote calm and relaxation. As you rest comfortably with the needles in place, I’ll guide a gentle meditation to support your body in settling more deeply and allowing for a nervous system reset. Dim lighting, peaceful music, and the co-regulation that happens in community all contribute to a deeply restorative experience. There will be time at the end for reflections and questions.
This is an approachable, low-pressure introduction to acupuncture. All bodies are welcome; no experience is necessary. A consent and waiver will be required to participate, and all health information will be kept confidential in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
Tickets are $25 per person. Please sign up HERE.

So start cleaning out your closets, AND read on for all the details below…
Clothing drop-off at the Artery (during store hours): May 11th - 18th — **timed entry swap tickets also distributed during drop-off (more below)**
Volunteer sorting & setup days: May 18th - 29th — email info@brooklynartery.com if you’re interested in volunteering!
SWAP DAY!: Sunday, May 31st
Accepted items: clean, stain-free and hair-free clothing, shoes, hats, outerwear & bags in good condition (all ages / genders / seasons)
**How the Swap Works: Timed Entry Tickets**
We’re thrilled that this swap has gained so much traction over the past few years that it needs a bit of structure to run smoothly for everyone! So, to keep the experience chill and ensure everyone has room to browse, we’re using timed tickets for our swap day on May 31st (11am – 6pm).
Dropping off clothes? When you drop off your items earlier in the month, you’ll get to pick a specific time slot to come back and "shop" on swap day – May 31st.
Nothing to drop off? Folks who don’t drop items off are still welcome to come shop on the 31st — though we encourage everyone to find closet items that need new homes! Just head to the door anytime on May 31st to grab an available timed ticket.
This way everyone will get a chance to come in and have a chill time browsing. And we promise, treasures are available ALL day long. In fact, it’s often easier to find gems after the initial rush! We can’t wait to see everyone find new goodies :)

Live Music: Stefani Bondari & Daniel Kleederman
Stefani Bondari is a compelling pianist and songwriter based in Brooklyn. She skillfully incorporates aspects of indie pop into her music. Bondari has made a name for herself in the music business with her distinct and upbeat sound. Her expressive and emotional tone has captured the attention of listeners.
Daniel Kleederman After a half-decade as a dedicated collaborator, lead guitarist, and music director for indie darling Bartees Strange, where he “help[ed] redefine the sound of indie rock for the 2020s” (Rock n’ Roll Globe), Daniel Kleederman chose to let go of the festival lights and international tours to bring his attention to his own music and path. Releasing Another Life, his debut LP, featured as one of NPR’s “Best New Albums” during its release week in early April, was his first order of business. The record, a heartful journey through the depths of love and loss, is a “genre-bending lesson in songwriting.”
Live Music: Worldwide Seagull, Maxwell Quinn, Otracami
Worldwide Seagull
Worldwide Seagull is a song-art project brined in the power of the imagination and absolute truth. Seagull strives to provide care and healing, living off her songs amid ink drawings and an abundance of candles, with a high chance of having a hot tub in her apartment one day.
Maxwell Quinn
“I invented a new kind of milk that’s really good for you.”
Maxwell Quinn’s music can be confusing, it can be funny, and it can be sad, but it’s generally considered entertaining. It is both loud and vulnerable. His latest album “The Identical Man” is available online and his second book of poems and stories is out as well, titled “Damn It!”.
Maxwell grew up in Brooklyn, partially in Ditmas Park. Despite his petite frame, he has been told he has the singing voice of a very large man.
Otracami
Otracami is a songwriter, performer, and sound designer based in Brooklyn. She released her debut album, touching the stove coil, in 2023, drawing praise from outlets like Under the Radar, Week in Pop, and Various Small Flames. As a sound designer, her previous projects have included EVERY VOICE, a sound and sculpture exhibit for the LA Philharmonic, KLII, featured by the Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival (2023) and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2025). She is also one half of Myrtle, a collaboration with vocalist and composer Claire Dickson. Myrtle’s 2020 song “Shifted” was featured by NPR All Songs Considered.
Workshop: Writing to De-Stress
For many of us (especially neurodivergent folks and people with post-traumatic stress), basic advice around stress management and self-soothing techniques—or even talk therapy or journaling—don’t help or feel like a good fit. For example, unguided meditation or journaling can be very difficult or even triggering for many.
At this workshop, you will learn about the health benefits of writing and leaning on art and imagination in intentional ways, and we will craft resources tailored to work for your mind/body using tools from EMDR, polyvagal theory, your sense of humor and imagination, neuro-affirming strategies, and creative writing prompts.
Participants will leave with a nervous system map, individualized guided meditations and movement practices, writing prompts, new grounding tools, and, if desired, a local accountability buddy for trying them out at home in the weeks ahead.
Facilitated by Rousz DeLuca (they/them), local therapist/writer/educator.
Registration is $35 a spot. Please register HERE. Participants may attend in-person or via Zoom.

The Art Table
Doesn't it feel like it's becoming increasingly difficult to make art these days? Let's gather for commiseration, collaboration, and skill-sharing. Writers, visual artists, musicians, textile artists, filmmakers, photographers, people who fall outside strict categories but have been making art for a couple years—if you've been wanting to meet other artists, especially outside your discipline, come and share your work! Bring something short to show/read/play/work on, your listening skills for four to five artists' work, and ideas about what this space can do for all of us. We'll have a laptop and projector.
Niv Sekar will be hosting. Please RSVP HERE to let us know you’re coming!
The Backspace of the Brooklyn Artery is wheelchair accessible, but please note that the bathroom is not. However, we can direct you to a nearby, friendly location with an accessible restroom if needed. The bathroom is genderless. Masks are encouraged but not required. We’ll also have masks available on the day of the event. If you have specific accessibility needs, please reach out via DMs—we’ll do our best to support you.

Noa Fort's Plant People
A long time Ditmas Park resident, Fort is a vocalist, pianist, composer, improviser and music therapist, working in the Jazz and Creative music scene in New York and Internationally. She released critically acclaimed albums as a composer/bandleader, and is a regular collaborator with some of NY's greatest improvisers. Fort is also a licensed creative arts therapist and board certified music therapist. Plant People is her chamber-jazz quintet of stellar improvisers; together they treat her compositions as starting points to collective improvisations and vice versa.
Featuring: Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon), Mike McGinnis (bass clarinet), Anders Nilsson (guitar), Satoshi Takeihi (drums) and Fort on voice and compositions
Dan Loomis’s Songs for the Mother Tree
What can trees tell us about community, love, intelligence and resilience? The scientific community is undergoing an explosion of discoveries of the powerful connectedness, consciousness and aptitude among trees. Our arboreal neighbors are capable of so much more than we have imagined — and take action in ways completely unlike our own - and often difficult for us to perceive.
Just as trees communicate with each other in a different way……. maybe we should be talking about them in a different way. This project is an attempt to channel the recent human inspiration from trees into a sonic world - to speak through music and art rather than only through science.
Featuring: Jeff Miles (guitar), Elsa Nilsson (flutes), Mike McGinnis (clarients), Noa Fort (voice), Dam Loomis (bass and compositions)
