Live Music: Devon Gates, The Bronx River, Teeter

Devon Gates is a Brooklyn-based, Atlanta-born bassist, vocalist, and composer whose work sits at the intersection of jazz, chamber music, and social storytelling, having worked with Terri Lyne Carrington, Vijay Iyer, and Nicole Mitchell. Gates has been named one of 2024’s Up and Comers of the Year (The New York City Jazz Record) and a 2026 Next Jazz Legacy Awardee.

Ben Roffman aka The Bronx River is a guitarist from one curve of the river of which he shares his namesake. B.R. is jangly and sparkly, with hypnotic single coil sounds and colors. His favorite color is purple. He’s happy to be there, wherever it is. The Bronx River is usually a band, but he’ll be playing solo this time, singing songs for your amusement.

Teeter is a quartet featuring Miranda Agnew (trumpet), Naomi Nakanishi (piano), David Macchione (bass), and Alex Yoo (drums).  Miranda’s compositions for the ensemble, which are dedicated to characters from her favorite Sci-Fi and Fantasy books, feature intricate counterpoint, shifting rhythmic foundations, and energetic improvisation. Teeter has built a strong ensemble sound, performing several times across New York City since summer 2024. Members of the group have led bands at venues including the Jazz Gallery (NYC), the Jazz Gallery (NYC), Bar Bayeux (Brooklyn), and Jamboree (Barcelona). Teeter will be joined by special guest Katie Webster (alto saxophone).
